YMCA Portage Ave. West

Smith Carter’s integrated team was involved in the creation of the YMCA Portage Avenue Branch, a conversion from a former Canadian Tire Store. Due to unprecedented success, we were immediately asked to expand it by 8000 sq.ft. the following year. The firm was responsible for the branch's initial design and construction in 2003-2004 including an aquatics centre with a moving floor main tank, whirlpool, and kids pool. Also included are an aerobics room, weight training and cardiovascular equipment areas, gymnasium, multi-use exercise room, climbing wall, play structure and locker room facilities . This was a fast-track project, construction managed by the owner, with an astonishingly low total cost of development around $4 million. The membership growth rate continues, today more than double the initial business plan.
