Naval Officer Training Centre

Smith Carter was the Advocate Consultant for the Naval Officer Training Centre which provides new 9 800 m² dining and accommodation facilities at Workpoint, CFB Esquimalt, overlooking Esquimalt Bay.

In collaboration with Department of National Defence stakeholders, Smith Carter facilitated an integrated design approach to establish appropriate performance and sustainability criteria, promoting such variables as local procurement of materials and labour, maximum use of natural ventilation and daylighting, high efficiency equipment, recycled structural content, and green site planning minimizing runoff and utilizing the site’s natural topography.

The resulting design included solar chimneys enabling 100% free cooling, water conserving plumbing fixtures, drought-tolerant landscaping, widespread use of recycled or reclaimed materials including heavy timber structural members, masonry, rebar, fly ash concrete, formwork and structural steel.
