ICORD
The International Collaboration on Repair Discoveries (ICORD) is a new research centre to foster and maintain an interdisciplinary, collaborative research and training environment for the development and translation of more effective strategies to promote functional recovery and improved quality of life after spinal cord injury (SCI). It is the first integrated research and treatment facility for persons with spinal cord injury - in the world. The initiative brings together discovery, clinical and rehabilitation researchers to facilitate the discovery of solutions to improve mobility, community integration, and quality of life for people with spinal cord injury. ICORD is an initiative founded by the Rick Hansen Man in Motion Institute, University of British Columbia, and Vancouver Coastal Health.
The 10 000 m² centre is located on the site of Vancouver General Hospital and houses 300 researchers and their teams. It links local, national and international researchers through the Rick Hansen Spinal Cord Injury Network.
Smith Carter has specific responsibility for laboratory and related technical planning including schematic and detailed design, overall massing, and architectural design concept. The project team was also involved with program development, site assessment, urban context review, and base building design with joint venture partner, Musson Cattell Mackey.
