In the Manitoba marketplace, for projects seeking LEED® certification, it is commonly assumed that since certified “green power” is not available, then credit EA 6 - Green Power is impossible to achieve. Electricity in the Province of Manitoba is provided solely by Manitoba Hydro, a crown corporation utility that does not currently market a “green power” product to retail consumers. As an owner-occupier (rather than lessee), Smith Carter was in an advantageous position to achieve this credit, having direct financial responsibility for both capital project costs, as well as total life-cycle and operational costs for the building.
