The selection of materials and products for construction and the management of waste are significant sustainability issues. The environmental impact resulting from virgin material extraction, processing, manufacturing, transportation, and ultimately disposal, are significant. Globally, the construction industry is estimated to be responsible for consumption of 40% of materials, and for generating 33% of solid waste in North America.
Smith Carter utilized numerous strategies to minimize the environmental impact of the materials used to construct SC3. Efforts began with research and specification of durable, locally manufactured materials with high recycled, regional, and rapidly renewable content. Beyond the design effort, behavioral change was encouraged during construction to maximize material recycling and minimize waste, which has continued on seamlessly into the occupancy and operation of SC3.
SC3 received 7 out of the 14 possible LEED® Credits in this category. To learn more, view our Materials & Resources PDF.
