Our Organization

Smith Carter team members join a global leader and enjoy the benefits of working on a diverse array of projects. The firm’s 60-plus year legacy began in the central Canadian city of Winnipeg, Manitoba when the late Ernest J. Smith and Dennis H. Carter first envisioned an integrated architectural and engineering practice that would stand for design excellence and collaboration. The firm’s evolution paralleled the changing landscape and events of the times – starting as a builder of community schools as tiny Prairie towns diminished, growing as urban centres developed, and becoming specialized in order to compete at a global level. As the world grew smaller, public health crises and security concerns became a common denominator across nations. As a result, over the last two decades, the firm emerged as a leader in the integrated design and engineering of the world’s most complex buildings and environments.

While international events and trends have changed the scope of the firm and the portfolio of projects, the original vision of our founders has stayed the same. Smith Carter’s international home base remains in Winnipeg, but today offices are also located in Ottawa, Calgary and Atlanta and our projects regularly take us around the globe to locales such Mexico, India, the United Kingdom and Kyrgyzstan.

Our core specialties are the design and engineering of complex projects in the Science and Technology, Healthcare, Security and Defence, and Urban Impact markets. We have a diverse, interdisciplinary team of over 170 architects, engineers, interior designers, landscape architects and urban planners who provide their expertise to projects within these sectors. This in-house capacity allows us to create the right team for each project, examine problems from every angle and perspective, draw from knowledge honed through years of experience and discovery, and collaborate and coordinate in a way that is only possible through a shared experience, philosophy and operational approach.
